Hi Anja, what does the work of an Online English Teacher involve?
We do different things in our online lessons, depending on whom we’re teaching, including assessments and conversational classes. A typical day at work for me might include: arriving at work, chatting to other teachers in your team, maybe have a cup of coffee, prep for your classes and then you start teaching. After a few sessions, you have lunch and hang out with your colleagues. After that, you go teach a little bit more. Then the day ends and you go back home…till the next day.
What’s the best thing about being an Online Teacher and what’s most challenging?
The most awesome thing about it is watching people grow, both professionally and personally. Seeing students have the ‘Aha!’ moment is the best thing ever! That’s what really motivates me to do my job. The most challenging thing sometimes can be the cultural differences, as our students can come from all over the world, but we’re quite well prepared for that before we start a lesson because of the training at TRGTC. Also, when you teach someone who’s older than you sometimes it can feel a little bit intimidating – but with peer mentoring at TRGTC then it’s quite easy to overcome. In the end, I’ve found that most of my students are really awesome and they’re all great people!
What advice would give to someone who wants to be an Online Teacher?
I would say that you need to have passion for teaching people and you need to be patient. You need to be open to other people’s perspectives and be respectful of other people as well. Being willing to have fun in class is quite important too.
What sort of person is suited to be an Online Teacher?
I think that you have to have some interest in education and seeing people grow, which is something that makes our job really awesome! You have to be a people-person and be able to approach everyone as an individual. You need to be able to think-on-your-feet, as students can respond in many different ways during an online class. People who are short-tempered and impatient wouldn’t be suited to this work.
Thanks for sharing, Anja!
