Tell us what’s involved in the day-to-day work of an Online ESL Teacher?
I have the privilege of listening to children tell stories and showing me their new watch or bubble maker (or new thing that’s bringing them joy in their lives)!
Every day I encourage my young students to fall in love with learning, whether it is through reading stories with them or enjoying cute English speaking bunnies, a hamster and many other animals that they adore (i.e. teaching props and toys).
I gently motivate learners to speak and to share their thoughts on the subject matter. I create and foster an online classroom that is a safe place for them to relax and join in with me on a learning adventure.
When a student is feeling overwhelmed, it’s important for them to know that they are doing well. I do this by using an encouraging word or a teaching prop (like a flower or stars) to put them at ease. They enjoy getting rewards!
On a day-to-day level, my work involves me first checking my schedule and preparing for the day’s lessons. I then do an internet speed test and software technical checks a few minutes before a class is due to start to ensure everything is working for conducting an online lesson. Also, I get my teaching props ready and upload onto the system any extra material that I might need during the online lesson.
Once the class is over, I leave feedback for the students (which is like a little lesson report for them). Then I do a little admin’, as well as check my Skype messages and emails during the day.
When all the classes are finished, I take time to reflect on the day.
Why did you decide to become an Online English Teacher?
I like meeting new people, who I would not have the chance to meet in my city.
Most of all, I love English and I enjoy teaching it!
With online teaching, I can be creative and incorporate my drama background. For example I can use puppets, musical instruments and act out the parts of the stories with the children. There is a lot of creative freedom!
What advice would give to someone who wants to be an Online Teacher?
If you have been thinking about doing online teaching, then go for it!
You can make a difference in a child’s life. Exciting, isn’t it!
Educate yourself by watching some YouTube videos and ask advice from people who do this work.
